Final Work and Evaluation

Throughout the project, I have really enjoyed working with
paper and figuring out the logistics of constructing my book. I like the
physical aspect of making images through doing things like screen printing and
pottery, so paper cutting and making dioramas was another way to enjoy that. I liked
researching into women of the wild west and also women of colour as it gave
another perspective of that era. I feel that most scenes looked really good and
were able to get the narrative across also I love how it folds out and you can
turn it around to see the narrative so I think that my choice of style was
good. I wanted the colours to get
lighter the further back they were to give a better appearance of distance in
each scene. Working with paper cutting in the past inspired me to develop that
further in this project by making it more 3D. I was inspired by artists such as
Kathy Fahey and Jim Doran with their layered paper cuts and dioramas. My
biggest influence was looking at carousel / star books as I thought they were a
great alternative to just a normal book, yet they can still fold up and look
like one. Some scenes are easier to see what is going on than others due to placement
of each card piece or I think I needed to look more at the best angles to place
things and people in order to get the best representations of what is
happening. I didn’t take into account
the extra card I used to make the scenes so the cover doesn’t fit perfectly so that’s
something to consider in the future.
