Retro Recreation

Image
Retro Recreation To record my summer I wanted to look to my surroundings for inspiration, with who and what was around me in this time. I started by drawing portraits of my family and friends and also the places I was spending my time in.     The displays of plants, pots and crockery have a mid century vibe to them with the geometric patterns and bright colours. This gave me the idea to recreate elements of my home with 60s and 70s furniture with lots of plants and patterns. I painted some of these in gouache to get an idea of colour schemes and how to colour the pieces.   Looking at the patterns from the crockery and inspired by 60s floral designs, I created these print ideas. I wanted to use warm colours to create cohesive designs. Mid century designs are very geometric and usually repeating and simple. Researching 60s furniture lead me to notice the pattern of styles that were used in design of that era including the use of coloured plastic, wooden accents an...

Stay Home Stay Supportive

Image
Stay Home Stay Supportive Talenthouse Competition I illustrated this work for the Talenthouse Brief 'United Nations Global Call Out to Creatives'. The brief was about creating art in response to the Covid 19 pandemic.  A prominent message that I was seeing that I wanted to represent was that people can stay home and still be supportive whether that is keeping in contact with friends  and family or giving support to small and local businesses.

Home Decor

Home Decor Looking around my house, there are collections of plants and objects that remind me of mid century designs.  I love the elements of 60s and 70s design with the geometric patterns and bright colours. This inspired me to create this illustration of some of those items.

Non Binary People Do Not Owe You Androgyny

Image
Non Binary People Do Not Owe You Androgyny This project is about dispelling the myth that non binary means having a certain look or being androgynous. Chatting with model Jordan Underwood about their opinions and experiences, they gave me a better informed angle on the subject.  I started out with sketches of Jordan and experiments with composition and using the colours of the non binary flag. Using watercolour and paint pens for the painting, I wanted to create a contrast of texture and block colour for the background. For this piece of work I wanted to create something that was inclusive and hopefully relatable for non binary people. I wanted it to be a powerful piece which would inform others and to empower non binary people when they look at it.

Pattern Commission

Image
Pattern Commission I was commissioned to create a retro inspired pattern for a clothing pattern company. The inspiration was 60s and 70s fashion and colour palettes.    I started out by creating ideas around the themes of vintage items and also sewing and fashion. Settling on mid century fashion, I create these portrait illustrations. I used Illustrator to finalise the design and create a repeating pattern. We decided on making them into cards and collaborated on designing vintage colour palettes.  After printing, they were sold in a local shop.

International Women's Day

Image
International Women's Day Poster Talenthouse Competition With the Talenthouse Creative Brief of 'Celebrate Women's History Month', I submitted this illustration. I wanted to create artwork that would represent diversity and also create a sense of community. Representation is important, so I chose to illustrate women from all walks of life.  The message I wanted to spread was to support other women rather than be in competition with one another and to respect each other no matter their ethnicity, body type or ability. In the competition, I was selected as a finalist.
