Points of View Statement

Proposal

PROJECT THEME: Fast fashion and its links to wealth

POINT OF VIEW 1: someone with a very high income that might even own a fast fashion company and looking into how they might prioritize money over human and environmental ethics

POINT OF VIEW 2: someone with a more middle income who has the time and money to be able to source vintage and second-hand clothing which I think falls into the age bracket of a teenager to a young adult. I think there is also a divide between people my age that do that but then also people that do shop at fast fashion places and frequently doing so, so it creates throw away culture and has big environmental impacts

POINT OF VIEW 3: someone who is of a lower income who possibly can’t afford, doesn’t have the time or doesn’t have much access to charity shops and thrift stores so resorts to fast fashion as it’s the only way to get clothing. I think its also important to get across that someone who can’t afford or doesn’t have enough time to thrift clothing, and also someone that doesn’t always shop at charity shops that it isn’t their fault and that they shouldn’t be shamed for buying fast fashion or doing everything perfectly as its mainly the big fast fashion companies that are having the biggest environmental impact.

Evaluation

From my initial proposal, my project has changed quite a bit. My original idea was about fast fashion but I decided to change it to something that was more specific that I think will make more of an impact for people. Vaginismus is a condition which many people suffer from in silence, so I wanted to put it in a more positive light to hopefully make people more confident and comfortable with it. I want it to be more normalised and I can hopefully do that by talking about it and making art about it.

My three viewpoints are that of the three characters in my work that are talking about their experiences and feelings towards vaginismus. These were inspired by the questionnaire that I carried out asking people for their stories of having the condition. I wanted the characters to be telling it from their experience so that hopefully people will find it easier to talk about their own journey. This personally gave me a chance to learn new things, expand my knowledge and see the condition from many perspectives. With each individual story, I wanted to be able to show different sides of the condition, like it can happen at any age, after you've been having sex with no problems and that different techniques work for different people.

From a talk by artist Beth Suzanna, I was inspired to try out paper collage. It was a new medium for me and I really enjoyed experimenting and trying out different techniques with. I think that it really compliments my usual colourful, simplistic style so it was fun to explore a different way of working. Choosing to use text in my work, I think gives a more direct message.

The most important thing for me is how the viewer feels after seeing my work. I want them to feel positive so I made my work bright, vivid and colourful. Throughout my work I kept the colour schemes similar to create a cohesion between each piece.

I am very happy with how my work has turned out as the purpose of the work has come across well and I think that it really could help people with vaginismus. My illustrations are informative and uplifting, highlighting the positives of the condition which was my initial aim. I hope that people relate to my work and are encouraged to talk more feely and comfortably.
