Artist 4 Artist Response Work

 Response to Lubaina Himid's Work

For my response piece to Lubaina Himid's work, I wanted to take my work out of paper or a screen like I would usually do, and create a 3D or sculptural piece. I really like how Himid uses instillations as a way of portraying the messages in her work and that is something I wanted to bring into my response work. Whilst thinking of how I could bring my work into a 3D form, I found some food jars that I was going to throw out but thought they could be interesting to draw on. I was also inspired to create a piece that explored history and hopefully discover interesting stories that I haven't heard of before like Himid does. Taking something that I am interested in, 60s culture, I wanted to explore this time within the piece.

One of the iconic places from the 60s was Carnaby Street which was an epicentre for the youth of the time of culture, fashion and music. Visually for me, I wanted to take the bright and bold colours and patterns of the street and incorporate that within my work. The thing that I love most about Himid's work is her use of vivid colours combined with graphic patterns which I thought could merge well with my inspiration for my response piece.

I like how to jar to me resembles a shop window to act as a display like the actual shop windows. It also reminds me of time capsules and I think that my work encapsulates that time period for that specific place. It represents a revolution and more freedom of sexuality. I definitely enjoyed exploring stories and history that I didn't know about already. To draw on the jar, I used coloured Posca Pens which I love the bright and solid colours on which I think worked well on the glass. I also enjoyed bringing my work out of being digital which I would usually do as its given me an opportunity to be more experimental and look to different ways I could present my work which Himid definitely has influenced.
